Building a website
Should my Moroccan business use a .ma or a .com?
Both work. The right one depends on who you sell to. Whichever you pick, it has to be registered in your name.
The short answer
Use .ma if most customers are in Morocco; it signals a local business. Use .com if you sell to tourists, export or work with foreign clients. Many businesses register both and redirect one to the other. .ma domains are managed by ANRT and registered through accredited registrars.
Who are you talking to?
A plumber in Meknes: .ma. A riad in Fes whose guests come from Europe: .com reads more naturally to them. An olive oil exporter: probably both, one redirecting to the other, which also stops a competitor from taking the second.
Pick a name people can type
Say it out loud to someone and ask them to type it. If they hesitate over the spelling, change it. Avoid hyphens and the French accents a domain cannot hold.
The trap
We regularly meet business owners whose domain was registered by a former contractor. When renewal comes round, nobody has the logins. Insist that your company is the registrant, with your own email address.

Frequently asked questions
Can a foreigner register a .ma?
ANRT sets the conditions and the registrar checks them. Registering through your Moroccan company is the simplest route.
What if I forget to renew?
The site and email stop, and the name can eventually be released. Turn on auto-renewal.
